Since their invention, it’s been estimated that cars have killed 60-80 million people (Miner et al., 2024). This is comparable to the deaths of World War I and World War II combined.
The car has long been marketed as a symbol of freedom, when it has, in fact, constricted our cities, drained our finances, and constituted a health risk.
These policy briefs recommend actions for governments, businesses, civil society and the public to develop new sustainable ways of moving around our cities.
